MARMARIS - SOUTH DODECANESE ISLANDS - MARMARIS
Day 1 - Marmaris
Marmaris is a port city and a tourist resort on the Mediterranean coast, located in southwest Turkey, in MuÄŸla Province. Marmaris is a heavenly corner where you can see all grades and harmonies of green and blue during the twelve months of the year. The abundance of bays in the long coastline; its being a natural port; ancient cities; natural attractions; Blue Cruise facilities, the marina for 800 boat and water-sports facilities are the peculiarities making Marmaris a paradise for tourists. Marmaris is one of the most elegant yachting resorts in Turkey. A point to meet the most beautiful boats. Ultramarine blue sea, mountains and pinewoods sketch the landscape. Many choices of shops, cafes, restaurants are to be found along the narrow streets of the town.
Day 2 - Rhodes Island
Rhodes (Rhodos or Rodos in Greek), lies between Crete and the near East in the Aegean ocean. Rhodes is the biggest of the Dodecanese islands. Named the sun island or island of light there are hardly any days when the sun doesn't shine. With its subtropical climate and over 3.000 hours of sun per year, you can be guaranteed a good tan on your holiday. Rhodes is one of the most popular holiday islands in Greece - even Greeks themselves come to Rhodes for a holiday from the mainland.
Day 3 - Symi Island
Symi has the most beautiful harbour in Greece. On either side of a steep-sided fjord rise tier upon tier of houses, some white, some pastel yellow, but virtually all with Neo-Classical pediments - a reminder that 100 years ago this was one of Greece's most prosperous islands. There has been virtually no modern concrete construction here and now these fine old houses are being resurrected for visitors. The spirit of the island remains intact.
Day 4 - Bozburun
Bozburun is renowned for the thriving sponge business and gullet yacht construction industry. Some of the best wood and craftsmen for building strong and beautiful gullet boats are to be found in this region, which is why leading names in the business employ Bozburun’s boat makers. Owing to its gullet and yacht manufacturing industries, Bozburun has become a central attraction, visited by tourists from all across the world.
Day 5 - Bozukkale, Serce Bay
Bozukkale (Loryma) is an ancient city that dates back to 10 BC. There are nine towers of the castle walls extending in a mutually rectangular pattern. The castle and towers are very well preserved and appear in a solid-state. ‘Kale’ means 'corrupted'. Therefore, the name of the place may be attributed to the fact that one side of the castle is missing. Bozukale used to serve as a bay cruise stretch for British naval ships and is now considered as a shipyard on the shore. It was used as a place to watch all the yachts in the Aegean. Its strategic geographical location and the narrow port were also used by the ships sailing from the port of Athens. In 395 BC, the Athenian commander, Karori, is known to have come here. Before the Cnidus War of 305 BC, Demetrios, son of Antigonos chose this port for preparations before attacking Rhodes.
Service is where the Blue Cruise boat moor. The place offers a brilliant image of the bottom of the harbour and is well protected from the harshest weather conditions. Underwater surveys and excavations have led to many discoveries including much centuries-old glassware, which is now kept in the Bodrum Underwater Museum. Sparrow Harbor is the place for such archaeological findings. About one kilometre ahead of Sparrow, on the right, are the villages of Kırkkuyular and Sindilli, where many abandoned stone houses can be found. In Kırkkuyular, the region’s oldest residence, there are 40 cisterns. The water in this region is saline and unfit for animal husbandry and agriculture. The residents use the wells for household use.
Day 6 - Kizil Island, Arap Island
At sunset, the sun hits the stones and turns crimson red in colour, a colour that resembles the island soil. The island got its name from this phenomenon. There is very little infrastructure on this island. The southern tip of the island has a lighthouse that guides maritime traffic. To the north-west is the Deliktas Islands, ideal for diving and fishing. The red waves off the east coast of the island wash the wide sand beach and are best suited for swimming.
Day 7 - Kumlubuku, Paradise Island
Kumlubuku is a large bay laying one mile north of Kadirga Limani, close to Marmaris. Set in a beautiful landscape, the bay is overlooked by the ruins of the ancient settlement of Amos. There are an acropolis, an amphitheatre, a temple and an altar to Dionysus to explore. It’s quite a hike up to this important historic site but the efforts of those who persist will be rewarded with spectacular views out over the bay. And on the way down, the excellent crepes served by the Hotel Dionysus, located on the bay, will taste all the better. A restaurant with enticing straw huts full of giant cushions sits right on the shore and is a delightful place to lounge for a few hours. The restaurant serves pretty decent Chinese food, which may be of interest if you have overdone it on the meze or had enough grilled meat on your Kumlubuku yacht charter. As the sun sets, the staff from the restaurant light huge torches all down the beach and the jetties are lit up with underwater lights – it’s a spectacular sight. The pristine clear waters of the bay offer good snorkelling.
Paradise Island is actually a peninsula covered with forests. It is located at the entrance of the bay of Marmaris and is especially popular among the places frequented daily boat tours. Almost every boat stops here to allow the tourists to partake of the natural beauty of this place. You need to walk for about 8 km before reaching Liar Strait from where you can walk straight up to Paradise Island. The trail offers a unique opportunity for a nice nature walk. The Liar Strait received its name from the geographical structure of the Bosphorus strait that resembles a liar. This is quite a rocky area but you can avail a gulet yacht and enjoy the spectacular scenery of Paradise Island. There are many good restaurants and cafes around the island. Paradise Island is also very ideal for swimming. You can spend a full day on the island without getting bored.
Day 8 - Marmaris
We will leave the boat by 10:30 after breakfast.
